Colouricious Holidays

Join us on a trip of a lifetime

colouricious textile holidays

We have had a bit of a run on holiday bookings this week, so if you are considering joining us on any of our trips later on this year, I would encourage you to reserve your place as soon as you can. Our trips to Jaipur and Rajasthan are particularly spectacular. We have been running these holidays for several years now and have honed them down to ensure that everybody has a great time and enjoys themselves. We have learnt the best places to go and the best times to go there. We know the best craft stalls to visit and how to get the very best deals if you decide you want to purchase something. These trips are really special and the messages we get back from people who have been on the trips in the past just reinforce this.

*************************************

From Heather, Jaipur Trip 2013 “The highlights of the trip for me were the Bagru block printing workshop and the elephant ride – both had me feeling very emotional. Infact, the whole trip did – it exceeded all my hopes and expectations. The organisation was just fantastic and it was so special to be at the true heart of the textile industry in Jaipur. So much colour, vibrancy, inspiration, fun and truly life-enriching experiences. To anyone who goes to Jaipur – don’t miss the Observatory, a wonderful surprise. I even got to drive a tuk-tuk – scary but exhilarating! I will always be grateful to Jamie for making my dream of a textile trip to India come true.”

*******************************************
Dear Jamie and the whole team, just wanted to take a few moments to say thank you the holiday was more than I could have imagined in every way the hotels the transport the visits to cities and villages the range of textiles we saw, and those that we had the opportunity to try our hand at. I was speechless from day one (not true I had a lot to say) the sights the sounds and smells and nor forgetting the company of the group all of whom shared a common interest . Oh dear, it was all amazing and also life changing in so many ways, thank you all for your superb organisation and sharing your love of textiles and India……………….I will be back
Regards
Linda

*******************************************

If this tempts you, then come over to our website and book your place, we would love for you to join us!

An Invitation to Rajasthan

We cover a lot of ground when we go on our tour of Rajasthan. We have calculated that the tour is approximately 1.735km over a 14 day period. There is inevitably a lot to see and take in on a trip like this, but we organise it in this way to make sure you get to experience as much of this wonderful region as possible.

Rajasthan-Block-Printing

If the highlight of the tour is the visit to the Pushkar Camel Fair, then the underlying delight is the variety of sights and sounds you get to experience as we travel through the region stopping at places like Delhi, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Pushkar, Barmer, Ajmer and Jaipur the capital of the region.

The Region

rajasthan-map

Rajasthan is the largest region of India and is located in the North West of the Country. The state was formed in 1949 after India gained its independence from The UK. The majority of the region is covered by the Thar Desert, but it also has some wonderful areas of natural beauty including two tiger reserves and the Keoladeo National Park which is a World Heritage Site well-known for its bird life. Our tour flies into Delhi where we spend a couple of days before entering Rajasthan on its eastern border. We then travel predominantly westwards through Bikaner, Pokran to Jaisalmer. A turn to the south towards Barmer and then Eastwards through Ajmer and Jaipur before heading back to Delhi.

Whilst the tour is focussed on the textile arts and crafts of the region, it is impossible not to be amazed and astounded by the sights and sounds of the whole region. Even though the desert covers a lot of the region don’t be mistaken into thinking that everything will look the same. You will get to see some wonderful flora and fauna and Rajasthan is renowned for its national parks and sanctuaries.

The Culture

colouricious-quilting-textile-arts-holidays

The other beauty of the region and India in general is the wonderful culture of the country. The people of the region embrace their history and tradition which reflect the ancient Indian way of life and this manifests itself in the textile crafts, music and dance that you will see on this tour. You will get to see lots of traditional colourful art mainly produced using block printing, tie and dye printing and intricate embroidery styles, all of which are major exports from Rajasthan.

The People

stitch-holidays-India

At the end of the day though, it is the people that make this tour so special. The warmth of the welcome and the kindness and patience they show to the people on our tour is endearing and really makes you feel as if you are part of their family. We have built up good friendships and relationships over the time we have travelled to Rajasthan and you will definitely benefit from our knowledge and past experiences to ensure that this trip to Rajasthan really will be your trip of a lifetime.

If this synopsis of the tour has whetted your appetite to go on the tour, then head over to our website and reserve your place. We are off to Rajasthan in November and would love for you to join us.

Make a Fabric Necklace

Make a Fabric Necklace

An elegant design and easy to do

fabric-necklace-300x150

This is a wonderful crafting project to undertake. It is simple to do and the video we have on our website is very clear and easy to follow.

Fabric Necklace Video

Follow these instructions as a back up to the video to ensure your necklace turns out perfect.

Instructions

1. Choose a piece of fabric and then block print it with your favourite block.

2. Iron the fabric to seal the printed pattern. This will ensure that your fabric is washable up to 40 degrees.

3. Cut your material into strips ready to be formed into a necklace.

4. It may be necessary to join multiple strips of fabric together to get the correct necklace length. Follow the video to show you how to do this.

5. Fold the strip of fabric in half lengthwise and inside out.

6. Pin the fabric in place and then draw semi circle shapes along the length of the fabric.

7. Use a sewing machine to sew along the line you have drawn.

8. Remove the pins and cut off the excess fabric.

9. Thread a slightly blunt needle and sew through the corner of the fabric and secure.

10. Push the needle through one layer of the fabric and then slide the needle along the length of the fabric until it appears out of the other end of the fabric.

11. Continue to pull the needle and thread through the fabric, turning the fabric inside out. Leave the needle in place.

12. Take some polystyrene balls and some beads and start putting a ball into the fabric and push the fabric through a bead so the bead holds the polystyrene ball in place.

13. Carry on alternating balls and beads until you get to the length of necklace you require.

14. Cut off the excess material and use the needle to affix both ends of the necklace together

The Pushkar Camel Fair

The Pushkar Camel Fair is held in November each year at the time of the Kartik Purnima full moon. It is one of the largest camel and livestock fairs in the world attracting in excess of 11,000 camels, horses and cattle. It is visited by over 400,000 people over the duration of the fair which is normally 5 days long.

pushkar camel fair-camel-rajasthan-india

For the locals, the fair is a way to trade their livestock and set themselves up for the following year. For the tourists it is a chance to witness an amazing site of so much livestock located in one place. The fair has evolved over the years to acknowledge the fact that it has become a tourist attraction. Whilst the men trade their camels, cows, sheep, goats and horses, the women visit the stalls full of ornately crafted fabrics, beautiful jewellery and clothes.

pushkar camel festival-moustache-

The fair is opened by a traditional Camel race, with musical performers, dancers and other exhibitors displaying their skills over the 5 days.

With so much livestock on display, owners go to great lengths to make their camels eye-catching, decorating their animals with very ornate designs and hair shaving.

Pushkar is in India’s state of Rajasthan which is in the North West of the country. Rajasthan is the largest state in India by size and is approximately 40% larger than the UK. It has a population is about 70 million of which around 88% are Hindu.

If you are interested in visiting Pushkar and the Camel Fair, then Colouricious organise an annual trip to Rajasthan that will incorporate a visit to the fair to experience the sights, sounds and smells of this wonderful attraction. It is certainly not something to be missed, so if the idea is appealing to you, then head over to our website to see the full Itinerary. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed.

Put some Shisha Mirrors on your next project

Shisha Embroidery

Shisha Mirrors are tiny pieces of mirror used to adorn and embellishment your embroidery projects. You often see them on Indian and Asian products as the word Shisha comes from the Persian word Shisheh which means mirror work. The mirrors reflect the light and give your craft project an extra dimension and really makes them stand out.

We have a excellent video on how to incorporate Shisha mirrors into your next embroidiery project, so click on the video below to watch it.

If the idea of giving Shisha Mirrors is tempting, then we have the perfect answer. We have some bags of Shisha mirrors on our website that you can use on your next embroidery project.
